What is an Intervention?
Anyone who’s ever lived with or known an addicted person understands the type of insanity addiction can create. You try to make sense out of the insanity and often spend years accommodating ignorant, rude, and even abusive behaviors. You are being used and in the process you’re losing precious time, money and your own peace of mind. Perhaps you’ve kept silent, covering for them with authorities, credit card companies and others. But all you’ve really done is enable them to progress deeper into the disease. Sooner or later you’re going to become desperate and decide not to put up with it anymore. You want to take action to decrease the amount of stress in your home, to increase your safety, and to feel confident you’ve done everything possible to help your loved one beat their addiction. Finally, you’ve made the decision to call for help.
That’s when we act and intervene to positively change the situation. We get one chance to make a maximum impact and meet the objective of immediately getting the addicted person into treatment, normally a Rehab Center. The main focus of an intervention is to confront the person in a non-threatening way and allow them to see their self-destructive behavior (addiction), and how it affects not only themselves, but everyone around them including family, friends and/or co-workers. The Intervention team consists of a few people who have prepared themselves to talk to the person. In a clear and respectful way, they inform the person of factual information regarding his or her behavior and how it has affected them. The team highlights everything the addict has to lose, and what they have to gain by entering treatment. At the same time, the team is saying “good-bye” to the addict if they don’t immediately go for help. This is a tough-love decision that the family and friends have to make and stick with. Without firm resolve, the intervention has little chance of success.
